Petals for a broken heart

Curled up on the windowsill, Rebecca watches as the horizon fades into a lifeless gray, while a strong wind slips through the glass panes, foretelling a storm that, for now, is unleashing its force beyond the mountain.

Little by little, the few remaining rays of sunlight yield to dense clouds that give no respite to melancholy. Nearby, in a tree, a flock of jays and robins flutters in search of shelter, releasing a restless song into the air. The trees sway under the assault of the icy wind which, in its fury, tears leaves away and scatters them in every direction, laying an uneven, colorful blanket upon the ground.

As she watches, her thoughts drift with the same intensity as the wind that sweeps everything in its path. She no longer remembers how many times, in recent years, she has sat in that very spot to feel the pulse of nature, to absorb the sun’ s energy as it bids farewell to the day and yields to the shadows of night.

Nor does she remember how many times she has had to gather courage in the face of adversity, or how many masks she has worn to conceal the wounds that, for years, have lived within her mind. The only thing she knows with certainty is the peace she finds in that small corner— her oasis, as she calls it. A refuge where she can take in every nuance of the world around her and, for a moment, feel part of it.

But today, that same landscape offers none of its usual splendor— the very beauty that so often soothed her sorrow.

She longs for the rain, now beginning to lash across the fields, to carry away the last traces of pain and the tears still rooted within her body.

She longs to be drenched in it, to dance in perfect harmony, like a wandering heart playing an invisible flute, capable of summoning a pure, almost celestial melody. She longs for that music to transform her, to make her bloom like fertile earth that still holds life within it.

She closes her eyes and lets herself be guided by the damp scent filling the air. She allows the spirit of the rain to make her heart beat and to carry her mind back to the memory of that love who once gave her warmth and hope in days of solitude.

The man who is no longer here, taken by a fate that asked no permission, torn from this world too soon.

Only he knew how to hold her together when she felt herself collapsing under the weight of a cruel, imposed exile. And it is to him that she still speaks in silence, on gray days, when nostalgia settles without warning… as though, somehow, he might still hear her.

Driven by her thoughts, she begins to write a letter.

A letter that will never reach its destination— not in this world.

She wants to pour into it everything she cannot say aloud. And yet, deep down, she knows she does not wish to let him go: she prefers that he continue to live within her mind, in that place where death cannot reach, where his voice still breathes.

My dearest:

Today I wish I could tell you so many things… speak to you of my longings, my desires, my fears.

Where are you?

I wish I could understand more, but what is left unsaid cannot be understood— least of all when the silence is final, when you have gone to a place my hands cannot reach to touch you, to caress you. And yet, here, on this side, I keep reinventing you in a thousand ways.
